WALKING ON THE AMALFI COAST - 16/08/2010

Known as the Amalfi Coast, the steep southern edge of the Sorrento
peninsula is a World Heritage Site, famous for medieval villages perched atop cliffs covered in near-vertical lemon orchards.
Combined with the rugged landscape behind, crowned by the Monti Lattari, and the idyllic islands of Capri and Ischia, is is also a perfect holiday destinations for walkers, blessed with year-round sunshine.
Some routes follow the ancient mule tracks and country lanes linking the villages across the mountainous peninsula and around the islands, at times shared with farmers and their mules loaded with firewood or freshly harvest lemons.
Others cross hillsides thick with Mediterranean plants, exquisite wild orchids, lush green woods and valleys or follow goat tracks across rough volcanic terrain.
These routes can be fitted into a single day, with apanoramic picnic stop halfway round and perhaps aplunge into sparkling Mediterranean at the end.
